Windows Security Hole - VML - Vector Markup Language

Sep 27, 2006

This is a major security hole just discovered in Windows. This hole allows a website to install software without you noticing even on a fully patched system. To protect yourself until Microsoft can fix this problem you can unregister the offending dll file. There are thousands of sites out there running this exploit and this is a serious problem.

To do so click on Start button.

Click Run

Delete any text show in the field next to run.

Paste the following command into the field:

regsvr32 -u "%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll"

Click on okay. You will now see a message pop up confirming that you have unregistered the dll.

When Microsoft patches this hole more information will be available here along with instructions to reregister the dll.

Visit http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2020256,00.asp for more information.

Microsoft has released a patch for this problem. To reregister the vgx.dll Click Run in the Start menu and enter this command:

regsvr32 "%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll"

More information on the fix from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-055.mspx
